Strong leadership and ability to motivate others
-
My MSc was in Leadership for Health Service Improvement at HSMC at University of Birmingham where I was able to learn and understand as well as research leadership in all elements.
-
360 degree feedback I undertook evidenced that I have good leadership and motivational skills
-
I am able to skillfully lead and motivate organisations with their participation in reviews.
-
-
High level of interpersonal skills
-
I use a high degree of interpersonal skills to ensure that those who are involved in reviews gain a full learning experience despite that topic being distressing at times.
-
Working across various organisational boundaries and internally within roles I can draw on interpersonal skills to recognise where I need to apply variations to style dependent upon the situation and nature of the interaction.
-
I have made good use of coaching to benefit me with a confidence to manage interpersonal skills during stressful situations.
-
-
Handling complex group dynamics
-
Facilitating and chairing complex groups and situations, has given me opportunities to develop this skill, ensuring that all viewpoints can be heard. I understand the importance of setting clear ground rules and drawing people back to those rules if necessary.
-
-
Collaborative problem solving
-
In the work I have undertaken in reviews I have been able to move away from providing solutions and have moved more toward using the expertise of the people I am with to provide those solutions together. Ensuring that all views are included to some degree wherever possible and practicable and that all involved feel that they have been useful and part of the process is something that I strive to achieve as often as I can.
-
-
Enthusiasm for participative approaches
-
I firmly believe that the staff working with the issues on the ground can often come up with the best solutions and it is important that they feel part of the process of any improvements.

Interest in systems methodology
-
My study of organisations as systems was part of the OD module that I studied for my MSc.I had long been critical of previous SCR methodology and have therefore welcomed a different approach to undertaking reviews in safeguarding. My knowledge of the SCIE process and my involvement in SILPs and now as lead reviewer has given me a better understanding of use of systems methodology.

Desire to promote reflective learning culture
-
In undertaking reviews, I encourage those involved in cases to reflect on practice but to look forward for solutions that make practice stronger.
-
As a nurse I have been brought up within a culture of reflective practice as a way of learning and improvement. The Action Learning sets that I have been involved with and that I have facilitated have evidenced that this way of learning is very effective and I believe that reflecting on experiences brings about powerful change in people. My MSc involved being part of an Action Learning set from an experiential way of learning about the process of internal reflection based on the challenges posed by other members of the set. It was studied in a theory element and then assessed in an assignment. This style of learning can be very beneficial when applied to safeguarding practice but requires skilful handling when facing very emotive issues in the sphere of safeguarding.
